Raise boring machines are among the key pieces of equipment used for mining in underground mines. As the core component of the machine, the drill pipe is subjected to significant pressure and friction, and is frequently eroded by dust and water during operation. The failure of drill pipe threads represents an important research topic. This paper conducts an in-depth analysis of the causes of thread failure in large-diameter raise boring machine drill pipes and proposes corresponding improvement measures.
In daily operation, we have observed that drill pipe threads often fail due to various reasons, which mainly fall into the following two categories:
Non-standard thread design of the drill pipe is one of the main causes of thread failure. Problems related to thread depth, angle, and fillet transition are the most significant design defects leading to thread failure. Although many thread standards are currently available, they cannot fully meet the requirements under various operating conditions.
Poor material quality of the drill pipe also results in thread failure. For instance, insufficient hardness, toughness, tensile strength, and other mechanical properties can lead to early material damage or high susceptibility to stress.
To address the above problems, improvements are proposed in the following aspects:
Increasing the depth and width of drill pipe threads and providing appropriate fillet transition zones can significantly reduce the probability of thread failure. Meanwhile, the selection and design of materials for drill pipes should be based on actual working conditions. Material optimization has long been a challenging issue addressed by many experts and scholars.
Material quality is a critical factor. Therefore, during material procurement, strict control should be implemented in raw material selection, quality inspection, and other procedures to ensure compliance with standards. Regular sampling inspections should be conducted to prevent low-quality materials from entering the production line.
During drill pipe maintenance, operations should follow specified procedures, with strict control over the technical process of each maintenance step to ensure repair quality and reduce failures caused by improper maintenance.
Thread failure in large-diameter raise boring machine drill pipes is an important engineering and technical problem. By optimizing thread design, improving material quality, and implementing standardized maintenance, the probability of thread failure can be effectively reduced and the service life of drill pipes can be improved.
