S32205 Heat Treatment and Mechanical Property
The core heat treatment for S32205 forged round bars is solution annealing, which is mandatory after forging. Stress relief annealing is also applied as a supplementary process, and the sensitization temperature range of 450–600°C must be avoided throughout all heat treatments.
Forging Heating (Pre‑Process)
Initial forging temperature: 1150–1200°C
Final forging temperature: ≥900°C (to avoid deformation and cracking in the two‑phase region)
Post‑forging: Directly charge into furnace for solution annealing immediately; avoid holding at room temperature to prevent precipitation of harmful phases
Process Parameters (Mandatory per ASTM A182)
Temperature: 1020–1100°C (commonly 1050°C in production)
Soaking time: 2–4 min/mm of effective thickness (≈20–40 min for a φ100 round bar) to ensure thorough heating
Cooling: Rapid water cooling / spray cooling (cooling rate ≥100°C/min); air cooling or slow cooling is strictly prohibited
Target: Austenite + Ferrite ≈ 50:50 ±5%; dissolve σ‑phase and carbides; restore corrosion resistance and toughness
Hardness: As‑solutionized HB ≤227 (HRC ≤20)
Temperature: 650–750°C (commonly 700°C)
Soaking time: 1 h per 25 mm thickness (≈4 h for a φ100 round bar)
Cooling: Air cooling
Purpose: Eliminate residual stresses from forging/straightening, prevent distortion and cracking, without changing the duplex phase ratio
Mechanical Properties (As‑Solutionized · ASTM A182)
Tensile strength: ≥655 MPa
Yield strength: ≥450 MPa
Elongation: ≥25%
Reduction of area: ≥45%
Application
S32205 is widely used in fields such as chemical engineering, petroleum, marine engineering, and food processing. It can be used to manufacture equipment and pipelines in high temperature, high pressure, and highly corrosive environments.

Feature
Corrosion Resistance
The corrosion resistance of S32205 is attributed to its chemical composition and crystal structure characteristics. It has high thermal stability and oxidation resistance, and can maintain good performance in high temperature and acid-base environments. In addition, S32205 has a lower corrosion rate and higher resistance to stress corrosion, making it suitable for engineering in corrosive environments.
Weldability
S32205 duplex stainless steel has good weldability, but attention should be paid to controlling welding parameters during the welding process to avoid the precipitation of harmful metal phases, which may affect the performance of the material.
Polishing Performance
S32205 can be easily polished to achieve a high gloss surface effect.
Heat resistance performance
S32205 maintains good mechanical properties even at continuous operating temperatures up to 200 ° C, making it suitable for high-temperature working environments.
