Why Choose 38CrMoAl?

38CrMoAl is a special nitriding alloy steel manufactured by solid forging, and it is the preferred material for calender rolls used in rigid PVC high-gloss sheets, transparent sheets and non-polished sheets.

  • It features high forging density, no porosity or sand inclusions, excellent rigidity and low thermal deformation.

  • It is highly suitable for deep plasma nitriding, with an extremely high surface hardness, outstanding wear resistance and scratch resistance.
  • It resists corrosion caused by precipitation of PVC additives, plasticizers and calcium powder, and is non-sticking to materials with no oxidation or surface spotting.
  • It possesses excellent thermal stability, hardly deflects under long-term working conditions of 160~180℃, and maintains high dimensional precision persistently.

2.Material 38CrMoAl forging steel
3.Diameter  φ320–700mm
4.Length  1200–5500mm
5.Surface Hardness  HRC 68-72
6.Depth of hardened layer
0.30~0.60mm

Application

1.Rigid PVC thick sheets, high-gloss paint-free sheets, transparent PVC sheets

2.High calcium powder filled PVC sheets (high abrasiveness)

3.Long-term continuous mass production, requiring durable roll surface free from tarnishing and corrosion

Forging + Heat Treatment Process

1.Process Flow

Steel ingot / round steel → Solid open die forging → Post-forging normalizing → Rough machining → Quenching and tempering → Precision turning & grinding → Plasma nitriding → Mirror polishing / Optional hard chromium plating

2.Quenching and Tempering

Core hardness after quenching and tempering: 240~280HB.

It balances high strength and toughness, with excellent bending resistance and fatigue resistance.

3.Nitriding Process (Key Process)

Nitrided case depth: 0.30~0.60 mm
Surface nitriding hardness: HV950~1100 (approx. HRC68~72)
Minimal deformation occurs after nitriding, no heavy re-grinding is required, and ultra-high mirror precision is maintained.

Surface Treatment Schemes

Scheme 1: Pure plasma nitriding + ultra-mirror finish

Suitable for: ordinary rigid PVC sheets, high calcium powder filled sheets, applications requiring wear resistance and scratch resistance.
Advantages: high hardness, corrosion resistance, no delamination, long service life.

Scheme 2: Nitriding base + hard chromium plating

Chromium layer thickness: 0.08~0.15 mm.

Suitable for: PVC transparent sheets and high-gloss decorative sheets. The surface achieves mirror transparency without texture, easy to clean and free of adhesion to precipitates.

Other Commom Steel Grade

42CrMo4 (42CrMo)

It is the industry standard and first-choice material, featuring excellent forgeability, sufficient toughness after quenching and tempering, high bending rigidity and stable heat treatment performance.

Application: Calender rolls for most rigid PVC sheets, ordinary transparent sheets and wide-width standard-thickness sheets, with the highest cost performance.

34CrNiMo6

A high-strength nickel-chromium-molybdenum alloy steel. It possesses excellent toughness, rigidity and thermal deformation resistance after forging.

Application: Ultra-wide width and extra-thick rigid PVC large sheets, working conditions with heavy calendering load and drastic temperature fluctuation; the roll is not easy to deflect and deform.

40Cr

An economical forged material with lower cost than 42CrMo, and its performance after quenching and tempering meets conventional usage requirements.

Application: Calender rolls for low-end ordinary rigid PVC sheets with light load and general precision requirements.

Cr12MoV、H13

Forged die steel with ultra-high hardness, excellent wear resistance and thermal fatigue resistance.
Application: Custom rolls for high calcium-filled PVC sheets, severe abrasion working conditions, and occasions requiring ultra-long service life of roll surface.
